Just as Bryan Singer knew all there was to the Superman franchise and displayed his nostalgia in Superman Returns, it looks like Abrams' is going to show his own display of fandom for Star Trek.
Though the pilot for the original series wasn't picked up -- the second attempt was -- the film will pay tribute to one of its lost characters.
Bruce Greenwood Captain Christopher Pike
Bruce Greenwood has been picked up to play Christopher Pike, the first captain of the Starship Enterprise, in Star Trek.
Captain Pike was seen in the original unaired pilot of the original series. CBS rejected the episode, forwarded it onto NBC, and the network requested a second version. The only character that survived the edits was Spock.
The character became part of Star Trek lore and even appeared in a two-part episode.
Star Trek is expected to begin filming this month.
