Susan Sarandon is a respected, Academy Award winning actress. She's known for her strong political beliefs. In Enchanted, she just hams it up like the cartoon villain she is. As evil Queen Narissa, the cartoon witch comes to modern day New York to finally put an end to the beautiful ingénue she banished there.
Enchanted's Queen: Susan Sarandon
"There is a reason they dress like that only in cartoons," said Sarandon. "It is very difficult. Amy had a hundred-pound dress on or something, 80 pounds. What I was wearing, I mean even a drag queen would find her [too much]. The shoes, they would have liked to had that great height, but I can't wear heels that are that high. The high heels, the boots that didn't bend in the knee, balancing the collar. The head dress was really heavy. Being sewn in. Not being able to sit down at any time. All those things do demand of you, I mean you can't be too big with your gestures when you are dressed that way."
Sarandon is really into the Disney world. She's even anticipating her action figure. "I am hoping my action figure is one of those really beautiful things, you flip her over and the hag is underneath. Then there is ugly one underneath."
The actress strove to make her animated queen real, but she just had to go with it. "It was great to kind of surrender to something that is so far from reality. You are kind of hiding behind all this makeup and glitter as opposed to those kind of painful, personal things you take inside and live with. It was like a vacation. So if you are going to do something like that, Disney is the place to do it because they really have it down and I love the fact it was hand-drawn and not computerized animation because I always miss the feel of the human touch in those movies that are quite brilliant in their own way but kind of freak me out. It was nice they had those artists doing it."

Really, Sarandon is no stranger to big, broad acting. "You know when I did Rocky Horror Show I was making fun of every ingenues I had ever played. So I was kind of doing Amy's part in it. It was pretty broad but you have to sell it and I didn't have all the trappings of something as extreme. The gal I am playing now is very nasty but I don't think I have ever been that costumed up. I never remember what I have done but I can't think of anything where I have been that completely done up. In Illuminata (Romance and Cigarettes), John Turturro's film, I am pretty over the top and all done up as this Sarah Bernhardt-kind of person. That's pretty excessive."
Enchanted opens to theatres on November 21st.
