Jack Black has worked on the biggest budget Hollywood productions of all time like King Kong. Even his comedies are in the full-on studio system with all the trappings. His indie foray Margot at the Wedding was the other extreme, with no lighting and all natural locations.

"It was cool," said Black. "At the same time, I had a lot of times where I was like, 'We're done? We're done with the scene? We didn't get the nostril shot. Maybe we missed some of my good acting from the ass angle.' Well, we got that."
Playing Jennifer Jason Leigh's loser fiancé, with sibling Nicole Kidman glowering her disapproval, it wasn't Black's first "chick flick." He's getting used to those.
"When it's a boy's club that can be more relaxing. You can have more fun maybe but then when there's these incredible actresses that are really beautiful and intimidating, it's fun in a different way."
Not that Kidman went around trying to make Black uncomfortable. She actually indulged some of his film geek obsessions. "She wasn't doing anything to make me intimidated. She was pretty personable when we were hanging out and talking. She was pretty open to any subject. Like, I tiptoed around the Kubrick thing and she was totally into talking about Kubrick. I didn't talk about anything else spicy."

The raves he is getting for his dramatic performance may entice Black to do more non-comedy, but don't worry, he won't do a full Tom Hanks. "I get some cool offers for drama type stuff, but mostly no. Mostly it's comedies and I'm not going to get paid to do drama any time soon. I do it for the love of the game. In this case it was the director. I really wanted to work with Noah [Baumbach]. I really loved The Squid and the Whale. I'll do some more movies for free if they're good too. I'm warning you. So consider yourself duly warned."
