The Weinstein Company has picked up Gong Li and is next hoping to grab John Cusack next for Shanghai.

A period drama, Shanghai will have Cusack play an American who returns to a corrupt, Japanese-occupied Shanghai four months before Pearl Harbor and discovers his friend have been killed. While he unravels the mysteries of the death, he falls in love and discovers a much larger secret that his own government is hiding.
Mikael Hafstrom, who recently teamed with both Cusack and The Weinstein Company for 1408, will direct.
The film is a long time passion project for Mike Medavoy, who will produce, and Harvey Weinstein. The duo almost got the film up and running back in 2001 with Shakespeare in Love director John Madden set to helm.
Shanghai will begin filming in Shanghai early next year.
