It's always nice to see what other CG animation studios are up to. While Pixar is still the bar that everybody else tries to live up to, Ilion Animation has something special coming and, with the help of New Line Cinema, it could hit theaters by 2009.
Planet 51 Goes to New Line
With CG films grossing more than the biggest tentpoles, New Line Cinema figured it was about time to relax on live-action fantasy and jump into animation. Not that they need to create a new branch, as the studio has acquired Ilion Animation's Planet 51.
Written by the same dude who scribbled out Shrek, Joe Stillman, Planet 51 takes place on Planet 51, whose inhabitants live in fear of an alien invasion. Their paranoia is realized when astronaut Capt. Charles "Chuck" Baker arrives from Earth. Befriended by a young resident, the astronaut has to avoid capture in order to recover his spaceship and return home.
The film is being directed by Jorge Blanco and co-directed by Javier Abad and Marcos Martinez, both of whom worked with Blanco on the best-selling video game Commandos.

Planet 51 is currently in production and set for completion March 2009. There is no voice cast just yet, but Ilion is looking for some A-listers. Not wanting to wait, New Line hopes to release the film in 2009 with merchandise and video games to boot.
