The Nanny Diaries
Now, normally when I am asked to watch a movie about a young woman finding herself amongst Manhattan socialites – I run the other direction. But this time, I didn’t have that choice and was surprised to find The Nanny Diaries was actually pretty good!
DVD Review: The Nanny Diaries
Scarlett Johansson plays Annie, a recent working class college grad, who winds up taking a job as a nanny for the super-rich Mrs. X (Laura Linney). Johansson is fairly entertaining, but it’s Laura Linney who steals the show. She expertly flashes between a very plastic, fake ummm… female-dog… and then a heartbreaking wife who’s desperate for her adulterous husband’s love. Paul Giamatti is the cheating husband, Mr. X. Once again Giamatti plays his role perfectly, I found myself wishing he was in the movie more!
As far as special features go, these are standard. The theatrical trailer is here. There’s a Making Of… documentary and a fun interview with the authors of the book the film was based on. Most entertaining though, is a hilarious blooper reel.
The Nanny Diaries is PG-13 and definitely not meant to be a family movie for young children. There are some much more adult themes which are presented very realistically, such as adultery and a failing marriage. If you’re comfortable discussing bigger issues with your children, go for it. Otherwise, you might end up trying to answer some uncomfortable questions.
This movie is based upon the best-selling novel of the supposed real-life tales of some Manhattan nannies. As a film, the story flows smoothly and breaks away from some of the standard coming-of-age clichés. The Nanny Diaries is not groundbreaking, but it is entertaining.
