Back to the Fuhrer
I have a feeling we're going to be seeing something about the bit I inspired Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody to improvise during an interview for Juno. Since Juno tackles teen pregnancy, and Reitman already tackled the smoking lobby, I asked what issue was next. So I really think I deserve credit for inspiring this brilliance.
AIDS Plus Hitler Equals Comedy
"You know, I have an AIDS comedy that I'm going to do next year," Reitman began. "The problem is that AIDS wasn't around during the holocaust so I can't make an AIDS holocaust comedy, unless you add time travel. So it's a time travel comedy. It's about a girl with AIDS who goes back in time to fuck Hitler and give him AIDS. That's an awesome idea. Wait, that's my idea!"
Juno screenwriter Cody had the punchline. "It's going to be called Back to the Fuhrer."
Both cracked themselves up at that, rightfully so. "Back to the Fuhrer, that's awesome," said Reitman. "Oh my God."
For more laughs like that, see Juno. Cody added, "I'm not surprised that you came up with that idea. I'm just surprised you unleashed it in this setting."
Even a follow-up about turning hot button issues into comedy developed the act further. "Well look, when I do Back to the Fuhrer, there are going to be no jokes," said Reitman. "We're going to take it fairly seriously. The humor is inherent."
Cody continued, "Because this isn't going to be a trip and fall movie. The comedy is going to be very intelligent."
To bring it all full circle, Reitman concluded, "Yeah, Back to the Fuhrer is very much like Juno. They're kind of long lost siblings, like Diablo and I."
The duo left the interview talking about Back to the Fuhrer, Reitman speculating about actually doing a short of it. You heard it here first.
