The Golden Compass
Since the reviews for The Golden Compass continue to be extremely mixed, figured it would be worth while to serve up one more batch before the film's release.
Golden Compass Reviews
Since the reviews are most definitely mixed across the web and print publications I figured we'd quote those that were both negative and positive. Some critics are praising the film while others are finding that they just don't like it. So, what gives?

Nicole Kidman fans can sleep easy. After a series of arthouse flops, she is back on magnificent form as Mrs Coulter in the new £90million movie version of Northern Lights, the opening episode of Philip Pullman's fantasy series, His Dark Materials.
But is it any good? Definitively, yes. A beautifully made, spectacularly designed family movie, it dares to ask serious questions about good and evil, free will and adolescent sexuality. Granted many of these topics will float over the heads of its younger audience - but there's a spoonful of medicine mixed in with the sugar.
Slant Magazine (negative)
As a fellow critic lamented afterward, the whole shebang is just a prolonged setup for a bear fight, which I guess should please those who like to see anthropomorphic CG animals duke it out in hand-to-hand combat. Anyone hungry for drama fashioned with wit, depth, and enchanting magic, however, will have to look elsewhere, as The Golden Compass exhibits a fervent desire to avoid subtext at any cost, a goal that extends to its treatment of the novel's much-discussed anti-Christianity allegory. In order to appease devout viewers who've complained about the adaptation's critique of their faith-based institutions, Weitz and company have taken great pains to neuter their material of any specific denominational iconography. Yet such a tack is futile...

I liked it.
I don’t know how much deeper I need to get into the thing.
The story takes a while to get rolling, with a whole lot of what is not being said being dead obvious to pretty much anyone who has experience reading the tea leaves of dramas, professionally or otherwise. But for me, the film was kind of a primer for a series that I will be happy to watch.
I like Rings a whole lot, though not fanatically, and found Narnia to be for 8-year-olds... this one lives right in between for me, though it could well grow into something greater. I look forward to the next film.
The Golden Compass opens to theaters on December 7th.
