Underdog
To be completely honest, when this movie was first released, I avoided it with a passion. They say never work with animals or children, I think it’s because those movies usually suck. Underdog, though, surprised me.
DVD Review: Underdog
I can recall watch the original Underdog cartoons with my father and thinking they were hilarious. My fear with this movie was that it would destroy those happy memories with a terrible film.
Thankfully, Underdog doesn’t dumb itself down to make toddlers laugh. The film retained its’ campy humor, often poking fun at both itself and the oddities of the original series. This film is no Oscar winner, but it’s a very enjoyable family film.
The special features are standard fare but a few stand out. A blooper reel is quite funny and there’s a fantastic original Underdog cartoon to watch. Some deleted scenes are included, which were wisely cut from the film. There’s a clever documentary following the training and acting of the dogs in the film. And finally there’s an atrocious and ridiculous “Underdog Raps” Music Video by the awful Kyle Massey. Don’t waste your time even listening to that song.
In the end, Underdog is a tribute film to the original cartoon. It’s good clean family fun and worth sitting your younger children down to watch it with.
