You thought Will Smith was the only actor in I Am Legend, didn't you? Ha ha, there's a big surprise, which I guess it's okay to reveal since they had the actress doing press for the movie. Alice Braga makes her Hollywood debut in I Am Legend after shining in Brazilian movies.

Braga One of the Few in I Am Legend

"I read for the casting director here when I was in L.A., as lots of actresses get materials," said Braga. "Then I read the sides, because you don't get the script, and I remember the sides, I was really curious about it. I did the reading, and I loved the reading. Then I flew back to Brazil, and then they called me, and said, 'Well, Francis [Lawrence] would like to meet you and would like to put you to read with Will.' When I came in the room it was really magical, because you're like it's not Will Smith, it's not Will Smith, how can you read with that, with passion. So it was pretty interesting, because they made me so comfortable in the room."

She got the part, and now tries to describe it without giving away the whole movie. "It was wonderful, the creation of the character and all of those things. Francis was really with me all the time, trying to build that and trying to inspire me to understand. I read the book. I didn't want to just take notes with the book. I preferred to be talking with Akiva [Golddsman] and Francis all the time. And it was a great challenge. I think it's the type of character that when you're trying to portray someone and it's an extreme situation, it gives you a lot of work and a lot of room to play around, and they completely opened the door for us."

If Smith's character, Robert Neville, is resigned to the harsh reality of the end of the world, Braga's character may represent the other extreme. "She's a really strong character in a way that we talked a lot about having hope, and having hope not just in life, but in love and everything else. So I think it's wonderful to be able to portray that, not just stick her with one particular thing, like believing in one thing or the other, but just believe in yourself and life and in love."

Braga counts her blessings to be included in such a project, with some inherent complications of her own. "I think through the whole process, not just Will but Akiva and Francis, were all the time there for me, which was wonderful. I think it gave them a little bit of more work as they got someone that is like it's a foreign, have an accent. He's the kind of actor that every day, all the time he was kind of pushing me harder for it and giving space for it and just letting me search magic. So I think that's the biggest experience and inspiration that I can get from him."

I Am Legend is out in theaters now.
