Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
I usually count on Variety and THR to provide the negative reviews for films to the likes of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, but every once in a while they surprise me by giving a spoof a positive.
Official Reviews for Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
While the reviews admit that Walk Hard has a couple flat spots, the film has enough goodwill to keep trucking on.
Variety
At first this "Walk the Line" sendup sounds more like a sketch than a movie, before director Jake Kasdan and co-writer/producer Judd Apatow broaden it to include every tic of the musical biopic, from "The Buddy Holly Story" through the current wave. "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" thus strums the genre for considerable laughs, with John C. Reilly playing the title balladeer from teen to senior citizen, generating enough goodwill to offset the flat sections and a decidedly juvenile streak. While unlikely to rival Apatow's recent hits, box office should sing a merry little tune as a raunchy Oscar-bait alternative.
Hollywood Reporter
After a barrage of downer movies filled with gore, war and other bleak subject matter, finally there's a holiday release that's all about making spirits bright.
"Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" is a pitch-perfect musical comedy that at long last moves the talented John C. Reilly up the billing ladder from second banana to top banana.
Sprinting through the decades like Forrest Gump with a gee-tar, Reilly's blissfully oblivious Dewey Cox and the Jake Kasdan film (co-written with some guy called Judd Apatow) is just plain, undemanding fun.
