Gina Gershon on P.S. I Love You

Every romantic comedy needs a sassy friend, right? P.S. I Love You has several, not the least of which are Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gershon. The heroine's husband dies, leaving her postmortem letters to help her move on, and she needs some girlfriends to help her hit the town and push her along the way. Gershon knows her role in such a film.

Gershon I Love You's Sidekick

"Hilary’s husband character dies at the beginning, so I think it’s a lot like life," she said. "I think it’s bittersweet throughout the whole thing. I mean Lisa ends up nice that Lisa ends up getting married. There’s a scene cut out because when I’m pregnant and I haven’t seen her I’m actually kind of freaking out a little bit. She’s happy, but it wasn’t like, ‘Oh my god!’"

Usually cast in edgy roles, being mild was something of a revelation for Gershon. "I don’t think I’ve ever done a movie like this before. It’s like the most normal part for me that I’ve played, really. Everyone was like, ‘Oh, you’ll play the part that Lisa’s playing.’ And Ritchie knows me. He’s like, ‘No, no. I want you to be just kind of more of yourself and be Sharon . I just wanted to be a part of it because it was such a beautiful script and it meant something personally to me."

If this is the real Gina Gershon, what took so long to let her out on film? "I don’t know. I don’t know why I haven’t. I think I have gravitated towards a little bit more interesting characters. I’m more of a character actress. People have always cast me like that. It’s not that I wouldn’t do it. People don’t ask me to do it for some reason. Just lately they started asking me to do comedic parts, which is to me the thing that I love to do the most. And then as far as playing just myself, it hasn’t really come up that much. Isn’t that weird?"

The film's female-driven cast allowed for even more normal fun on the set. "The whole cast was really fun. Everyone really got along great. Working with Lisa was hysterical because we had never really met before and we found out that we had the same orthodontist in the Valley together. I mean, we really had a lot of similar upbringing. I had known Hilary from before. It was fun. It was really nice. I had never done a movie like that before. "

P.S. I Love You opens to theaters on December 21, 2007.
