Taking a break from comicbook adaptations and returning to his roots, Sam Raimi has announced that he will direct a supernatural thriller he wrote with his brother, Ivan Raimi, titled Drag Me to Hell.
Sam Raimi to Direct Drag Me to Hell (and Possibly The Hobbit!)
Drag Me to Hell will be financed by Ghost House, a joint venture created by Raimi and Rob Tapert. While the announcement came only today, Sam Raimi and his brother penned the script long before Ghost House ever existed. The film was originally titled The Curse and was completed right after 1992's Army of Darkness.
"Sam calls it a 'spook-a-blast,' a wild ride with all the chills and spills that Evil Dead delivered, without relying on the excessive violence of that film," Tapert said. "When one has done three very expensive movies, they get used to eating caviar. Sam will have to ponder what it means to come down from the mountaintop for a moment."
Drag Me to Hell tells the story of an unwitting recipient who gets struck by a supernatural curse. The film will go into production early next year.
A while back Raimi was on the top of a very short list to direct The Hobbit films. Now that Peter Jackson has made it clear that he will limit his role to that of a producer on the project, Raimi is expected to get behind the camera for New Line.
